Olympic Hopeful Makes Very Bad Move

The recent injury to Danny Davis brings to light an important issue with professional athletics. Davis is a snow boarder who had a shot at competing in the Winter Olympics in February, but due to a recent injury that event has been put on hold. Davis wasn't hurt while snowboarding; he crashed his ATV at 3:30 a.m. last week.
So with that in mind, I pose this question, "Why would an Olympic hopeful put himself into a position like this?" Why would any athlete put themselves in situations where the consequences are worse than the reward?
Kellen Winslow, a Tight End for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sustained injuries while doing tricks on his motorcycle in 2005. Again the question is "Why?"
These athletes are paid millions of dollars for their performances on the field, not on ATV's and motorcycles. It is irresponsible to put yourself in a situation where getting hurt could cost you not only playing time but money as well.
Even here at Kansas Wesleyan, we have responsibilities as athletes to perform at our highest level day in and day out, at practice and during games. A coach would rather have a player break his arm sailing out for a catch in the end zone against Bethany than during a pickup game of basketball.
They are what some call a "stupid injury." Something that is completely irrelevant to a particular sport. As athletes, we should be smarter when it comes to certain situations. Davis had just won a huge event in Odgen, Utah and had Olympic Medal written all over him. He decided to celebrate by driving his ATV with some friends. Davis had to be the unlucky one and his Olympic dreams will be delayed for another four years. He is now sitting in a hospital with a broken vertebrae in his back.
When we were little kids, some of our parents didn't even want us to go swimming before a game, and now, in college we are on our own.
Is it really worth missing a game or a season because we decided to go skateboarding or play a pickup basketball game?
We all have said at some point in our lives the famous quote of, "well it won't happen to me," or "I won't get hurt," and everyone knows that is beyond our control.
