National Music Competition Comes to Salina

The King Award for Young Artists National Music Competition is coming to Salina April 16-17, as twelve students from the finest schools in the nation compete for the highest award, the King Award.
The King Award includes a title, a $10,000 cash prize, and an invitation to play with the Salina Symphony. Over $22,000 in cash prizes will be given out throughout the competition.
Semi-final rounds will be held April 16, with the Piano Division being held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe. The String Division will be on the same day, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. inside Sams Chapel at KWU. Admission to these two events are free and open to the public.
Piano division competitors include Anna Bulkina from Texas Christian University, Frank Huang from The Cleveland Institute of Music, Jannie Lo from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Weiwen Ma from The Cleveland Institute of Music, Igor Pancevki from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Yekwon Sunwoo from The Curtis Institute of Music.

Strings division competitors include Anna Burden, cello from the Manhattan School of Music, Ko-Hsin Chang, cello from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, Esther Kim, violin from Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, Deborah Pae, cello from The Juilliard School, Igor Pikayzen, violin from Yale University, and Itamar Zorman, violin from the Manhattan School of Music.

The final round will take place at the Stiefel Theatre on April 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the award ceremony following at 4:00 p.m.

Also, you won't want to miss Behzod Abduraimov, the 2009 King Award Gold Medalist, as he comes back to play the piano on Friday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre. Abduraimov performed with the Salina Symphony on March 7 during their Romantic Interlude concert and wowed the audience with his skills, only being eighteen years old. Tickets to the event are $12 for adults, $7 for students and can be purchased at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office by calling 785-823-8309.
